Area Roundup 2-7-13: Apple Valley prevails in 2OT to take 2nd in MRL

APPLE VALLEY • Sheldon Lovett had a career game to lift Apple Valley into second place in the Mojave River League.

The Sun Devils beat Serrano 85-80 in double-overtime Thursday in the regular season finale for both teams. Lovett scored a game-high 39 points, including 12 points in overtime, and connected on seven 3-pointers. Apple Valley coach Joel Lewis said Lovett’s 39 was probably the highest point total for an Apple Valley player in more than a decade. Lovett added five steals.

Both coaches called the game a classic.

“Heck of a game to be a part of,” Lewis said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Serrano coach Brian Carrasquillo said: “It was a real exciting game. Fun to coach. To me, that’s what high school basketball is about.”

Apple Valley spent much of the league season hovering around third or fourth place. However, the Sun Devils went 4-0 in the final round of league play.

“Our team chemistry came together in that last round,” Lewis said.

Apple Valley’s JT Roach had a triple-double with 19 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists, and Darnell Crouch had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Serrano rallied several times in regulation and had one-point lead in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. But Roach went 1-for-2 from the foul line with .7 seconds left to push the game into overtime.

“I thought my boys played hard,” Carrasquillo said. “There were a couple times in regulation where we got down by 10. We put on a press that got us right back in it.”

Devin McDonough finished with 15 points, 12 assists, five rebounds and two steals; Terrell Glover 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists; and Timall Thomas had 20 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Apple Valley (15-9, 8-4 MRL) could have a home game to start the playoffs. Serrano finished the season 9-17 and 7-5 in the MRL.
