2009 Boys Basketball All-Area Team

FIRST TEAM

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
JAMAAL FRANKLIN
SERRANO, SR.
The forward put up eye-popping numbers: 31.7 points, 15.4 rebounds, 4.9 blocks, 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists. He missed the final part of the season and the D’backs’ playoff game for disciplinary reasons but was reinstated in time for an MVP performance at the High Desert All-Star Game.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
EARL JEFFERSON
BARSTOW, SR.
Coming off a junior season in which he earned Desert Sky League MVP honors, the forward used his size and skills to average 18.2 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game for the Aztecs in his senior year. He helped Barstow finish 6-2 in the DSL and reach the postseason.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
A.J. MATHIS
HESPERIA, SR.
Mathis was named the MRL player of the year after averaging 18.9 points and nine rebounds per game in league play. The center missed part of the preseason while being cleared for a fifth year of eligibility, then helped the Scorpions win the league title and a playoff game.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
JORDAN VARGAS
HESPERIA CHRISTIAN, SR.
The senior guard was named the Agape League player of the year, averaging a team-high 19.6 points, 5.6 assists and 3.1 steals along with 5.6 rebounds per game. He led the Patriots to an Agape League title, then helped them reach the CIF-Southern Section Division VI-AA semifinals.

KINTIN SCOTT
SILVERADO, SR.
The point guard was a key factor for the Hawks as they rolled to an undefeated Desert Sky League campaign. He earned DSL MVP honors, averaging 13.8 points per game — 18 per game in league play — along with 2.9 assists and 2.1 steals.

COACH OF THE YEAR
SERGIO LUGO, HESPERIA
Many thought Hesperia might finish third in the Mojave River League behind Apple Valley and Serrano, but Lugo guided the Scorpions to the league title, then led them to a playoff victory in a very tough CIF-SS Division I-AA.


SECOND TEAM

KEAUYON FIELDS
APPLE VALLEY, JR.
Fields averaged 11.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. He also had uncommonly good assist numbers for a post player with 2.5 per game.

KEVIN FLAGG
GRANITE HILLS, SR.
The senior forward averaged 12.3 points and 8.8 rebounds a game for the Cougars. He stepped it up in big games with a total of 45 points in two playoff contests.

DARIUS MCGEE
SILVERADO, SR.
McGee was a force in the post and led the DSL-champion Hawks in points (14.2), rebounds (10.4) and blocks (2.4) per game.

ALVIN JEFFERSON
BARSTOW, JR.
The junior guard averaged 14.5 points, 5.4 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game to help the Aztecs reach the playoffs.

RONNIE WHITE
HESPERIA, SR.
Undersized but quick and tenacious, White helped the Scorps win the MRL title and a Div. I-AA playoff game with nine points, 3.6 assists and 2.6 steals a game.
