Royals take another trip to semifinals
VICTORVILLE • The third-ranked Victor Valley Christian softball team survived a scare to defeat St. Matthias 7-6 in the CIF-Southern Section Division VII quarterfinals on Thursday, reaching the semifinals for the second year in a row.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Victorians (12-12) put runners on first and second following back-to-back singles. Then on a wild pitch, Victor Valley Christian catcher C.J. Hintz recovered in time and threw to third to get the lead runner out and end the game.
The Royals (25-3) trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning, but then scored a run in that frame and added three more in the bottom of the fifth. The three fifth-inning runs were helped by three St. Matthias errors.
Lauren Mueller went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs, a double and a triple for the Royals. Jazzy Hintz also finished the game 2-for-3. Mary Galindo came in to relieve in the first inning and went the rest of the way.
The Royals will play the winner of Saddleback Valley Christian and second-seeded Rosamond in the semifinals on Tuesday.
