Patriots ready for Rosamond
Hesperia Christian, the No. 1 seed in the CIF-Southern Section Division VII softball playoffs, is scheduled to face Rosamond in the division finals on Friday at 2 p.m. at Deana Manning Stadium in Irvine.
Although the Patriots are seeded first, they will be facing some tough competition. Rosamond has won its four playoff games by a combined score of 82-2.
“(Rosamond has) a good pitcher who throws a good fastball and they have good numbers as far as defense,” Hesperia Christian coach Christy Newman said. “It’s going to come down to the team that plays defense.”
However, intimidation is not a factor for the Patriots. They are determined to find redemption for the previous season’s disappointment.
“We made it to the quarterfinals last year against Hemet Baptist, but they won 7-6. The taste of disappointment really got the girls focused this year; they weren’t going to let things slip out of their hands,” Newman said.
A group of five seniors and the returning juniors have proven to be a large factor in the team’s success.
This is the squad’s first trip to the finals in 15 years. The last time the Patriots played in the finals, Newman was on the field herself.
“It feels wonderful to be able to give them the opportunity that I had,” she said. “I’m so happy for them to experience this. It’s a huge accomplishment.”
Rosamond will be a tough team to defeat, but the Patriots are focused and determined to pull through with a victory.
“I’m very confident our team will do well,” Newman said. “They have worked really hard to get where they are. This is a team you would want as a coach to take to the finals.”
