Marchese reaches finals at state freestyle championships

FRESNO • Robert Marchese, a 171-pounder, finished second in the Cadet Division of the freestyle state championships at Selland Arena on Sunday.

Marchese, a former Hesperia wrestler who will be an Oak Hills sophomore this fall, was pinned by De La Salle’s Lucas Sheridan in the second period of the championship match.

Marchese won the first round. He then attempted a shot in the second period, but Sheridan caught Marchese and pinned him.

Marchese finished the tournament 6-1 in the 25-man division consisting mostly of high school freshmen and sophomores. He finished a match away from going to the CIF State Championships as a freshman, losing in triple overtime.

Oak Hills coach Dave Stidham said that Marchese hasn’t missed a workout yet this offseason.
