Prep Boys Basketball Playoffs: Riverside Prep grabs historic victory

HELENDALE • The Riverside Prep boys basketball team blew out Vasquez 87-39 to pick up its first playoff win in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs.

“It’s a great win for us and shows our improvement in the playoffs,” Riverside Prep coach Daniel Rincon said. “The first year we lost by 40 points, whereas last year was a back and forth affair and this year it comes out very well for us.”

The Silver Knights’ swarming man-to-man, fullcourt pressure defense went a long way to securing the victory while forcing the Mustangs into more than 30 turnovers during the contest.

The Silver Knights (21-2) went on a six-point run to take a 10-2 lead early in the first quarter. They were only getting warmed up and went on a 16-6 run which gave Riverside Prep a commanding 26-8 lead at the end of the first period.

The halftime score stood at 45-22 Riverside Prep. In the second half the Silver Knights outscored the Mustangs 42-17. The closing 5 minutes of the game were played with a running clock.

Three Silver Knights scored in double figures led by Chris Bailey’s game-high 23 points. Mike Ortega contributed 12 points and Dontre King notched 10 points.

“It was tough game and their style of play took us out of our style and game plan,” Vasquez assistant coach Spencer Matthis said. “We aren’t used to playing at the level of intensity shown by Riverside Prep. Their whole team played intensely. We didn’t play the way we wanted to have a chance at winning this game. Our guys still battled and we look forward to returning to the playoffs next season.”
