Prep Wrestling: 'Rabbits hope to repeat dual championship

Victor Valley hosting Div. 3 Duals today

VICTORVILLE • The Victor Valley wrestling team has barely been tested all season, rolling through the Desert Sky League and a host of prestigious dual tournaments unscathed.

Now, the Jackrabbits will be tested thoroughly.

Victor Valley is hosting the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships today. The Jackrabbits are the top seed in the bracket and won the Div. 4 championship last year. But none of that guarantees them anything.

Numerous tough teams are coming into Keith Gunn Gymnasium, including second-seeded Long Beach Poly and defending champion North Torrance.

“We’re going to take it one dual at a time because there’s some really tough teams in there,” Jackrabbits coach C.T. Campbell said. “(In addition to North Torrance and Long Beach Poly), Hemet’s been wrestling real well, Beaumont is real tough, Paloma Valley, Temescal Canyon ... it’s pretty much up in the air. There’s not a given dual meet right now. Anybody can beat anybody.”

Victor Valley drew a bye in the first round and will face either Channel Islands or Hemet in the second round. The ’Rabbits will rely on their depth, including four section-ranked wrestlers in Hector Ruvalcaba (honorable mention at 120 pounds), Michael Lopez (12th at 152), Jonathan Oliveira (9th at 160) and Blake Fifer (8th at 170).

“We’ve got some good individuals, but we’ve got 14 solid kids,” Campbell said. “What I’ve been preaching all week is everybody needs to do their job and that it’s all about the team this weekend. You need to find a way to win for your team and do your job, and that job could be many different things.”

Silverado will also compete at the Div. 3 Championships, but coach Joseph Green said the Hawks might not field a full team.

They’ll will face Rowland, the Hacienda League champion, in the first round. If they win, they’ll have to deal North Torrance.

“I just hope to gain some really good experience for my guys,” Green said. “I have a younger team, so that’s what we’re trying to get out of it.”

The weigh-ins start at 9 a.m. and wrestling begins at 11 a.m.
