Prep Boys Soccer: Bulldogs complete first 12-0 MRL season
HESPERIA • The Oak Hills boys soccer team finished a perfect Mojave River League season with a 3-0 road win over Sultana on Thursday afternoon.
Oak Hills became the first boys team to go 12-0 in MRL play. The league expanded its schedule from eight games for the 2009-10 season.
“I’m very pleased with this team,” Oak Hills coach Darren Goodman said. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
Goodman said he didn’t think about going 12-0 until recently.
“It’s always one game at a time. If you win that game, everything else takes care of itself. I don’t think it was until we got to eight or nine wins that I started thinking we might have a shot. Every league game has been a battle.
“What makes it more special is we had some adversity along the way and people had to step up. The kids have done a great job.”
Oak Hills (21-2-2, 12-0 MRL) took a 1-0 lead at halftime playing into the wind and added two more goals in the second half.
Anthony Alvarez had a goal and an assist, and Mario Barboza and Sage Smith scored once each. Jacob Capps and Christian Caudle added one assist apiece.
Chase Gentry and Brad Kaufer split time in goal. Gentry made two saves and Kaufer had one.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked second in the latest CIF-Southern Section Division 4 poll, will enter the playoffs on a 10-game winning streak. The playoff brackets will be released Monday and the first round is Wednesday.
Hesperia had the previous record for wins in an MRL season when it went 10-0-2 in 2009-10.
