Prep Wrestling: Victor Valley dominates DSL Finals again
Jackrabbits sending entire team to Individuals
VICTORVILLE • The Victor Valley wrestling team matched last year’s performance at the Desert Sky League Finals.
The Jackrabbits advanced their entire 14-man varsity team to championship matches Saturday, and to the CIF-Southern Section Individuals in two weeks.
Victor Valley wrestlers won 11 championships, nine of them by pin or technical fall. The Jackrabbits more than doubled second-place Silverado in team points 275-126.
“The kids are working hard. You can’t take anything away from them,” Victor Valley coach C.T. Campbell said. “Everybody would like to get 14 out of 14, but sometimes that just doesn’t happen.”
Hector Ruvalcaba (120 pounds), Efrain Velasquez (138), Michael Lopez (152), Blake Fifer (170) and Renan Cruz (220) also won titles last year.
Oscar Preciado (113) pinned Silverado’s Jaime Ayala — who scored a fall against Preciado in the teams’ dual match earlier this week — in the finals, and Twan Portis (182) won his weight division after losing one match in league action earlier this season. “There’s only been two other three-time league champions at my school, so I guess it’s good to leave a legacy behind,” Edwards said. “It’s my senior year and I’m glad I was able to accomplish this goal I set out my freshman year.”
Edwards missed about three weeks of the season due to an injury to the cartilage in his right knee, but said he feels a lot better now.
Granite Hills qualified six wrestlers to Individuals, including Michael Nides, who lost in the 132-pound championship match.
Barstow sophomore Kiler Holmeyer (HWT) also interrupted the Victor Valley championship train with an 11-5 decision over the Jackrabbits’ Anthony Rosario. Holmeyer lost to Rosario in the teams’ dual and at the Dick Comly Invitational.
The Aztecs are sending five to Individuals, including second-place finishers Ryan Barela (120) and Neil Navarro (170).
“We have less qualifiers than last year, but having a league champion is a great feeling, because we didn’t have one last year,” Barstow coach Sam Barnhart said. “It’s great to see a kid set a goal and reach it.”
Burroughs’ Jake Farris (126) won the Outstanding Wrestler award after beating Victor Valley’s Carlos Morales in an exciting 8-4 match.
Silverado didn’t have a champion, but produced four finalists in Richard Ramirez (106), Ayala, Joseph Romero (126) and Emmanuel Sanchez (160). Eight Hawks are moving on to Individuals.
“We did really good. We had some really good performances from our guys today,” Silverado coach Joseph Green said. “I was proud of all of them. All the way around, everybody wrestled hard.”
The CIF-SS Eastern Division Individual Championships will be held Feb. 15-16 at Oak Hills. Prior to that, Victor Valley will host the CIF-SS Div. 3 Dual Meet Championships on Feb. 9. The ’Rabbits won the Div. 4 dual championship last year.
