2009 Baseball All-Area Team

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
KYLE COVARRUBIO SR., 2B/SS/P, APPLE VALLEY

Though the Sun Devils struggled, Covarrubio was a standout with nine home runs and a 1.212 slugging percentage in league play. He also batted over .450 and went 2-1 in three starts as a pitcher.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
ANDREW DISBROW, SR. SS, GRANITE HILLS

Disbrow batted .450, hit nine home runs and had 26 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .593 and his slugging percentage was .925. He also stole 12 bases in 14 attempts for the Cougars, who won a playoff game.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
JACCOB MUIR, SR. P/CF, BARSTOW

Muir’s massive offensive output (.448 batting average, .584 on-base percentage, .866 slugging, six homers, 25 RBIs, 20 stolen bases) complemented his 7-3 record on the mound. He had a 3.43 ERA with 47 strikeouts to help Barstow reach the second round of the playoffs.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
ROBERT VINDIOLA, SR. SS, SULTANA

The Mojave River League Player of the Year batted .527 with an on-base percentage of .608 to help the Sultans win the MRL title and reach the CIF quarterfinals. He had a .784 slugging percentage with four homers, 29 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

KYLE BUSSEY, JR. SS, HESPERIA

Bussey batted .397 with five home runs and 25 RBIs for the Scorpions, who took second in the Mojave River League. He had a .500 on-base percentage and a .718 slugging percentage.

FIRST TEAM
AARON HEWUS, SR. P/SS, VICTOR VALLEY CHRISTIAN

Hewus batted .701 with a .725 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of 1.179. The Agape League Player of the Year drove in 40 runs and hit four homers while also going 6-2 in nine starts on the mound, striking out 60 batters and walking only 19.

FIRST TEAM
C.J. KING, SR. P, GRANITE HILLS

King’s 2.72 ERA led the Desert Sky League, and he struck out 70 batters while walking 26. He also hit .408 with a .477 on-base percentage to help Granite Hills finish third in the DSL and reach the second round of the playoffs.

CODY LAVALLI, JR. OF, GRANITE HILLS

Lavalli’s .719 slugging percentage and 26 RBIs were each second-best in the Desert Sky League according to MaxPreps.com. He also had a .439 batting average, .493 on-base percentage and three home runs for the Cougars.

FIRST TEAM
ALEX POLLARD, SR. P, VICTOR VALLEY

The Desert Sky League Player of the Year was 8-5 in 13 starts with a 2.82 ERA (second-lowest in the league), 65 strikeouts and 24 walks to help lead the Jackrabbits to a DSL title. He also batted .329 with three homers and 21 RBIs.

FIRST TEAM
KENNY MCMURRAY, SR. OF/1B, SULTANA

McMurray batted .477 and drove in 20 runs in 25 games for the Mojave River League-champion Sultans. He also had a .575 on-base percentage to go with a .605 slugging percentage.

UTILITY
STEVEN BELTRAN, JR. OF, HESPERIA

Beltran batted .432 in 26 games for the Scorpions. He helped Hesperia reach the CIF playoffs with a .670 slugging percentage, 25 RBIs, 15 extra-base hits and 17 stolen bases.

SCOTT BOWERMAN, SR. P/1B, VICTOR VALLEY CHRISTIAN

Bowerman hit .518 and drove in 28 runs for the Royals with a .597 on-base percentage and a .714 slugging percentage. He helped Victor Valley Christian go 13-1 in the Agape League.

DARRIN DUNCAN, SR. OF, VICTOR VALLEY

Duncan finished off an outstanding three-sport prep career by helping the Jackrabbits claim the Desert Sky League title. He batted .358 with 15 RBIs and two homers and also stole nine bases in 10 attempts.

LUKE MEJIA, SR. SS, VICTOR VALLEY

Mejia was a standout defensive shortstop in addition to batting .392 with a .505 on-base percentage. A team captain for the Jackrabbits, he helped lead them to the Desert Sky League championship.

KYLE SPRAGUE, SR. P, SULTANA

Sprague went 6-4 in 13 starts with a 3.73 ERA. He was the top pitcher for the Sultans, helping them win a Mojave River League championship and make a quarterfinal playoff run.

COACH OF THE YEAR
DAVE HILL, SULTANA

Hill’s Sultans won the Mojave River League by two games over Hesperia, and then they advanced to the CIF quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Sultana’s playoff run was the deepest of any local baseball team this past season.
