2009 Softball All-Area Team

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
SIERRA RICK, JR. P, HESPERIA CHRISTIAN

Rick went 24-1 in 25 starts and led the Patriots to the CIF finals. Her phenomenal pitching numbers (0.24 ERA and 209 strikeouts to go with just 24 walks) were complemented by outstanding hitting (.545 average, 46 RBIs, six homers, .604 on-base percentage, 1.026 slugging percentage).

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
GABBIE BARTKOWSKI. SR. C/3B, ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Bartkowski batted .675 in 22 games, collecting 52 RBIs and six home runs. Her .687 on-base percentage and 1.288 slugging percentage helped AAE reach the playoffs as the third-place team out of the Agape League.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
KELSEY BYRD, JR. P/OF, HESPERIA

Byrd helped the Scorpions reach the CIF quarterfinals with a 14-5 record in the circle, a 1.33 ERA, 123 strikeouts and just 33 walks. She was also a dangerous hitter with a .387 average, 30 RBIs, three homers, a .418 on-base percentage and a .541 slugging percentage.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALIST
ALYSSA MALDONADO, SR. SS, BARSTOW

Maldonado helped the Aztecs reach the CIF quarterfinals with a .513 batting average, 18 RBIs and nine homers. The Desert Sky League Player of the Year had a .541 on-base percentage and a .962 slugging percentage.

FIRST TEAM
BRYNNA LAIDLER, SR. OF, VICTOR VALLEY

Laidler’s .533 on-base percentage and .788 slugging percentage helped the Jackrabbits win the Desert Sky League title. She also batted .470 with three home runs and drove in 26 runs for Victor Valley.

FIRST TEAM
LAUREN LARABELL, JR. C, SULTANA

Larabell batted .486 with 35 RBIs and three homers in 23 games, helping the Sultans finish third in the Mojave River League and reach the playoffs. She had a .513 on-base percentage and a .671 slugging percentage.

FIRST TEAM
EMILY MCCORMICK, SR. SS, SULTANA

McCormick posted outstanding numbers for Sultana, batting a Mojave River League-leading .522 with 15 RBIs and two home runs. Her on-base percentage was .619 and she had a .836 slugging percentage.

FIRST TEAM
KRISTEN PAYNE, SR. IF, APPLE VALLEY

Her team struggled in the Mojave River League, but Payne was dominant in her 22 games for the Sun Devils, batting .475 with 27 RBIs and seven home runs. She had a slugging percentage of .852 to go with her .529 on-base percentage.

FIRST TEAM
TONI SHURTRLIFF, JR. 1B/OF, HESPERIA

Shurtliff was a standout for the CIF quarterfinalist Scorpions, batting .447 with 15 RBIs and a pair of homers. She had a .533 on-base percentage and a .592 slugging percentage to help Hesperia take second in the Mojave River League.

FIRST TEAM
TIFFANY VANCE, JR. P/1B, GRANITE HILLS

Vance (14-9) was a major reason why the Cougars turned heads with a second-place Desert Sky League finish. Her league-leading 124 strikeouts and 3.68 ERA complemented a .389 batting average, 22 RBIs, two homers, a .457 on-base percentage and a .542 slugging percentage.

UTILITY
JESSICA BRIGHT, SR. C, VICTOR VALLEY

Bright batted .500 and was a standout as a defensive catcher for the Desert Sky League-champion Jackrabbits. Bright also had an on-base percentage of .522 and a slugging percentage of .750.

ASHLEY MCCLOUD, SR. SS, HESPERIA CHRISTIAN

McCloud helped the Patriots reach the CIF-Southern Section Division VII championship game with a .516 batting average, nine homers, 39 RBIs, a .609 on-base percentage and a 1.075 slugging percentage.

JAMIE ROLAND, SR. C, HESPERIA

Roland batted .417 for Hesperia and drove in 17 runs. She had a slugging percentage of .500 and an on-base percentage of .462 for the Scorpions, who advanced to the CIF quarterfinals.

UTILITY
HANNAH ULIBARRI, FR. P, BARSTOW

The Aztecs’ ace was 13-8 with a 1.69 ERA in 145 innings pitched. She struck out 99 batters while walking just 29, helping Barstow reach the CIF quarterfinals.

COACH OF THE YEAR
CHRISTY NEWMAN, HESPERIA CHRISTIAN

Newman led the Patriots to an Agape League championship and then took them all the way to the CIF-Southern Section Division VII finals, where they lost 2-1 to Rosamond.
