Hesperia senior center A.J. Mathis was named the Mojave River League boys basketball player of the year on Monday as the all-league team was released.
Mathis helped lead the Scorpions to an MRL title and a first-round victory in the CIF-Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs. He averaged 18.9 points, nine rebounds, 1.5 blocks and two assists per game and set a school record with 23 rebounds in one game.
Hesperia teammates Ronnie White and Storm Venegas were named to the All-MRL first team, and the Scorpions’ Chris Sheldon made the second team.
Second-place Apple Valley had the most first-team selections with three: Absalom Smith, Kimani Lane and Keauyon Fields.
Serrano’s Timmell Thomas and Graden Shortlidge rounded out the first team along with Rim of the World’s Max Barkeley.
Sultana had a pair of second-teamers — Leonard Lamp and Anthony Salgado — as did Rim of the World with James Millias and Trevor Soderholm.
