Area Roundup 2-27-13: AAE's Thymes takes home Agape League MVP

Academy for Academic Excellence junior Tim Thymes was named the Agape League boys basketball MVP.

Thymes finished the season averaging 15.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game in leading AAE to second place.

Hesperia Christian Scott Dobyns earned the league’s coach of the year honor after he leading a revamped Patriots roster to a fourth-place finish and a playoff appearance.

The All-Apage League first team included: Excelsior seniors Kevin White and Jerad Montgomery; AAE juniors Michael Coulter and Isaac Pieper; Lucerne Valley juniors Lonye Logan and Daniel Stratton; Hesperia Christian sophomores Jared Hays and Andrew Peacock; and Apple Valley Christian senior Make Medina.

Excelsior juniors Josh Fortson and Brian Montgomery as well as Victor Valley Christian junior Nicholas Villarreal earned honorable mention honors.

HCS and AVC tied for the sportsmanship award.

REDLANDS EAST VALLEY 3, OAK HILLS 0: At Redlands, the Bulldogs were shut out in their first loss of the season at the Redlands Baseball Invitational.

Logan Griffin went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

Oak Hills (2-1) continues tournament play today at home against King.

ONTARIO CHRISTIAN 3, VICTOR VALLEY 1: At Ontario, the Jackrabbits had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh inning but ended the game when they hit into a double play in a Redlands Baseball Invitational game.

Jacob Padilla was 2-for-3 and gave up one earned run in four innings of work on the mound.

Demarco Washington scored three times and Armando Santo-Ponce, Brian Lambaren, Blayke Silveria and Matthew Vela each scored twice.

Prep Girls Basketball
HOUGH, SIMPSON TAKE HOME TOP AGAPE LEAGUE HONORS: Hesperia Christian junior Olivia Hough earned the Agape League girls basketball MVP, and Academy for Academic Excellence coach Ashley Simpson received the Coach of the Year award.

Hough averaged 11.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 6.2 steals and 2.1 steals per game.

Simpson helped the Knights to an unbeaten Agape League campaign, and they eventually advanced to the CIF-Southern Section 5A semifinals.

Joining Hough on the first team were AAE senior Nikki Gruver and junior Melissa Owuor; HCS junior Addison Woods and sophomore Emilee Helm; Excelsior’s seniors Kory Washington and Julianna Phillips; Apple Valley Christian senior Carolina Carrazedo; Lucerne Valley senior Courtney Kelly; and Victor Valley Christian senior Tana Lopes.

The honorable mention involved AAE senior Haley Sutton and freshman Carolina Phillips; HCS sophomore Savanah Dobyns and AVC senior Christina Seaton.

Apple Valley Christian earned the league’s sportsmanship award.

ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 3, BLOOMINGTON CHRISTIAN 1: At Victorville, the Knights knocked off the fourth-ranked team in CIF-Southern Division 7 in a Royals Classic game shortened to four innings due to time.

Cassie Williams went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double, and she struck out eight and allowed one unearned run in the circle. Tori Williams batted 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Alyssa Frederick finished the game 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

AAE continues in the tournament today against Riverside Prep at 2 p.m.

GRANITE HILLS 2, SULTANA 1: At Apple Valley, the Cougars tied Sultana in the first inning and then Jasmine Marcial scored the game winner off Marissa Martinez’s hit in the fifth inning.

Freshman Erin Brunson made her first start in the circle for Granite Hills and recorded four strikeouts while giving up just three hits.

Cassidy Lavalli had a double and an RBI.

Granite Hills (1-1) hosts Palm Springs on March 5.

For the Royals Alicia Im had a hit, stolen base and an RBI. In her first game after transferring from Victor Valley, Noelle Ehlen had four strikeouts.

VVCS (0-1) faces Bloomington Christian at 4 p.m. today in tournament play while Riverside Prep (2-0) squares off against the Academy for Academic Excellence.

She recorded a grand slam, a home run, seven RBIs and scored four runs while going 3-for-4 at the Royals Classic.

Marissa Rados was 2-for-4, scored twice and had an RBI. In three innings of work in the circle she gave up three hits, one walk and had six strikeouts. Domonique Stewart was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

University Prep (2-0) faces Webb today in the Royals Classic.
