Prep Girls Basketball Playoffs: Shorthanded Silver Knights lose
HELENDALE • One team got over the playoff hump while another remained winless in the postseason when Bishop and Riverside Prep met Thursday evening.
Bishop came away with a 68-45 win in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5AA girls basketball playoffs at Academy of Careers and Exploration. It was the Broncos’ first playoff victory since 2007.
“It’s great,” Bishop coach Brian Pennington said. “We’ve kind of broke the glass ceiling so to speak. We seemed to be at one-and-out in the playoffs. It’s been a while since we’ve gone more than one.”
Meanwhile, Riverside Prep (19-3) has yet to win in four playoff apperances in program history. Riverside Prep coach Gunder Andreasen said that was one of the goals heading into the season, but the Silver Knights struggled just field a full team in recent weeks. They started with double-digit players but fielded just six Thursday.
Bishop got off to a fast start and Riverside Prep didn’t hit its first field goal until there was two minutes left in the first quarter. By that time Bishop had an 18-3 lead. Riverside Prep managed to keep pace the rest way, only being outscored by six points total in the game’s final three quarters, but the damage was already done.
“We played, except for that first quarter, about as good as we can play,” Andreasen said. “We had a bunch of turnovers and just stuff that we shouldn’t have (in the first quarter).”
Riverside Prep junior Tianni Hill put her final stamp on the 2012-2013 season in a big way.
Hill finished with a game-high 34 points and looked unstoppable for most of the night whether running the court on a fastbreak or hitting one of her five 3s.
“I have mixed feelings about it,” said Hill of ending the season. “I’m kind of sad. I have to wait a whole ’nother year for the season, but I’m going to work hard and try to play good and execute for my senior year.”
Hill is one of six players expected to return for the Silver Knights next year.
Bishop will host Bishop Diego in the second round.
