Area Roundup 1-31-13: Bulldogs secure MRL boys basketball title

HESPERIA • The Oak Hills boys basketball team clinched the outright Mojave River League title Friday with an easy 72-38 win over Hesperia.

The Bulldogs, who clinched a share of the title Tuesday, finished in a three-way tie for the championship last season.

Oak Hills led 19-17 after the first quarter, then outscored Hesperia 53-21 the rest of the way.

Anthony Jones finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and two steals. William Uelese added 12 rebounds and two blocks for Oak Hills (17-5, 9-1 MRL), which is ranked 13th in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A poll.

“I’m real excited,” Oak Hills coach Shaun Mora said. “We don’t have a superstar. We just have a real, real good team. I couldn’t be happier. The guys believed in everything since the beginning. I’m very, very thankful.”

Oak Hills plays Tuesday against Apple Valley. Hesperia (2-19, 0-11 MRL) will finish its season at Serrano on Tuesday.

OAK HILLS 44, HESPERIA 26: At Hesperia, the Bulldogs wrapped up the outright MRL title with a win over the Scorpions.

Yvette Nunez led the Bulldogs with 12 points and also had three steals. Bree Maikai had eight points and eight rebounds, and Jannon Otto tallied seven points and eight rebounds. Libby Harrison added seven rebounds.

Zayla Novoa led the Scorpions (3-8 MRL) with eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Bulldogs (19-5, 10-0 MRL) play at Apple Valley on Tuesday.

SULTANA 57, APPLE VALLEY 17: At Apple Valley, Natalie Osborne scored a season-high 23 points and the Sultans picked up a Mojave River League win.

Osborne also pulled down 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Sierra Prescott also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with three steals and three assists.

Sultana (13-9, 6-5 MRL) will host Granite Hills on Tuesday.

ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 2, SUMMIT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY 0: At Hesperia, the Knights picked up another Cross Valley League win and clinched at least a share of the league title.

AAE (11-5-1, 6-1-1 CVL) can clinch the outright league title and the league’s top playoff berth with a win over Riverside Prep on Tuesday. A loss would make it a shared title and the Knights would be the second seed.

Kyle Rodriguez and Jake Korthuis scored for AAE, while Dylan Stolp and Joel Burdette recorded assist.

Stolp and Reusch combined to make seven saves in net for the shutout.

SULTANA 2, APPLE VALLEY 2: At Apple Valley, the Sultans rallied to tie the Sun Devils late.

Apple Valley had leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Sultana’s Elizar Huerta tied the score at 2 in the final five minutes of the game.

Aser Vazquez also scored for Sultana, and goalie Anthony Squire four saves.

Sultana (4-5-2 MRL) travels to face Granite Hills on Tuesday before wrapping up the season Feb. 7 against Oak Hills.

Apple Valley’s Jonathan Gonzales and Jesus Gonzalez each scored once, and Antonio Salcido had an assist. Tyler Burkel made four saves in goal.

The Sun Devils (0-6-4 MRL) play at Oak Hills on Tuesday.

Prep Girls Soccer
SULTANA 1, APPLE VALLEY 0: At Sultana, Suenly Galvez broke a scoreless tie 15 minutes into the second half, and the Sultans blanked the Sun Devils.

Brenda Quintana assisted on the goal and Haylie Everett made seven saves in the shutout.
Sultana (5-4-2 MRL) plays a nonleague game at Granite Hills on Monday.

Tia Bonato made four saves for Apple Valley (4-3-2 MRL), which plays at Serrano on Friday.

OAK HILLS 2, HESPERIA 2: At Oak Hills, the Suter sisters both scored to help the Bulldogs come back and tie the Scorpions in a Mojave River League match.

Abbey Suter tied the score at 1, then Emily Suter tied it again with about eight minutes to play.

Monique Lopez and Kaira Wilson each had an assist, and Delilah Pina made four saves.
The Bulldogs (10-9-2, 2-6-2 MRL) play at AV on Tuesday.

ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 2, WEBB 2: At Claremont, Kaitlin Fundell dished out two assists in a nonleague match.

Samantha Donnelly and Leah Pritchard each scored, and Paige Miller made 10 saves.

The Knights wrap up Cross Valley League play against Riverside Prep on Tuesday at Victor Valley College.
