Prep Girls Soccer Playoffs: D'backs pound Pirates

PHELAN • Sick or healthy, Serrano’s Kellsie Gleason has been a scoring machine each of the last three seasons.

Despite still trying to get over walking pneumonia, Gleason scored twice Thursday to help the Diamondbacks rout Paramount 5-0 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 girls soccer playoffs.

It was the 13th straight win and 19th straight match without a loss for the Mojave River League champions. The D’backs, who ranked fourth in the final Div. 4 poll, have now won at least one playoff match in each of the last four seasons.

“We’re satisfied,” Serrano co-coach Dave Molina said. “We thought we played well overall.”

Paige Smith and Morgan Kawakami each had a goal and an assist, Lacey Slocumb scored, and Kaylee Poffek and Isalei Tauaese dished out an assist each.

“I thought our possession was pretty good overall,” Serrano co-coach Laura Antle said.

Serrano (22-3-3) recorded its 19th shutout of the season and Paramount failed to get a shot on goal.

Antle said wings McKenna Gleason and Kawakami stood out on defense.

Kellsie Gleason, who verbally committed to Auburn on Feb. 2, has scored 37 goals this season. Thursday was her 12th multi-goal match of the season.

She got going early when Smith found her in front of the goal within the first three minutes.

“I think it helped a lot because we were able to calm down,” Kellsie Gleason said. “Tensions are high coming into CIF because you don’t know what to expect, especially for the freshmen who haven’t been there before. So it helped everybody settle down.”

The junior forwarded added to her tally in the 21st minute when Kawakami fired a pass from behind the midfield line to her inside the box. Gleason had a one-on-one with the goalie and beat her, and the Diamondbacks took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

“Morgan served a perfect ball. I mean, it doesn’t get much better. I was able to touch it around the goalie, probably a little fortunate and it just squirted loose and it was there,” she said.

Serrano will face the winner of the Mayfair-Sierra Canyon match on Tuesday.
