APPLE VALLEY • Kevin Flagg sank a free throw with no time left on the clock to give Granite Hills a 70-69 victory over Ramona in the first round of the CIF-SS Div. III-AA playoffs on Wednesday.
The Cougars (13-14) held the Rams without a field goal in the second quarter on the way to building a big lead. Granite Hills led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter before Ramona started to rally.
With the game tied at 69, Flagg was fouled as time expired. After missing the first free throw, he made the second to win the game.
Flagg fininshed with a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Yoni Aynalem also had 22 points, including six 3-pointers.
The Cougars play either Hart or South Torrance in the second round.

APPLE VALLEY 90, CERRITO 76: At Apple Valley, the Sun Devils took advantage of their trips to the free-throw line and used some hot ouside shooting to win a first-round game in the CIF-SS Div. III-A playoffs.
Apple Valley (19-7) made 10 of 18 3-point attempts and 34 of 44 foul shots. They led by 10 at halftime and 18 after three quarters, and rolled to an easy victory.
Absalom Smith scored a team-high 28 points for the Sun Devils. He shot 4-for-6 from 3-point range and made 12 of 14 free throws. Keauyon Fields had a double-double with 21 points, including 13 of 14 shooting on foul shots, and 13 rebounds. Kimani Lane added 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Apple Valley plays either Segerstrom or Charter Oak in the second round.

WEST RANCH 73, SERRANO 46: At Phelan, the Diamondbacks (15-12) finished the season with a loss in the first round of the Division II-AA playoffs.
“(West Ranch was) just too deep,” Serrano coach Mike Browning said. “But the kids kept playing hard.”
Timmell Thomas led the D’backs with 21 points, and Graden Shortlidge scored 13.
Serrano got off to a fast start in league play but struggled over the final three weeks after losing three players for disciplinary reasons, including leading scorer and rebounder Jamaal Franklin.

ST. ANTHONY 64, ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 53: At Long Beach, Marty Scarberry’s 25 points weren’t enough in a Division V-AA playoff loss.
The Knights (17-7) finished third in the Agape League.
“Considering AAE didn’t win a game two years ago, (the season) was amazing,” Knights coach Scott Kamerick said.
