Vehicles targeted in Wrightwood thefts
WRIGHTWOOD • Christmas presents were among the items stolen from one locked vehicle and eight unlocked vehicles in Wrightwood, officials said Monday.
“My neighbors, people down the street, friends of mine — a lot of people were hit,” explained victim Veronica Hill. “Luckily, I didn’t have anything valuable in my car.”
On Friday morning, nine vehicle owners in Wrightwood reported having been the victims of theft overnight, according to San Bernardin o County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Harbottle. Eight of these victims had left their vehicles unlocked the night before.
The Victor Valley Sheriff’s station filed one report of burglary and eight reports of petty theft. Whether or not a vehicle is locked at the time of the crime affects the severity of the charge, Harbottle said.
“Crooks know people are doing their Christmas shopping,” Harbottle said, explaining that these incidents appeared to be crimes of opportunity.
At least two more unlocked cars have been targeted since Friday, Harbottle said. The Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station has not identified suspects and is still investigating the incidents.
