Winter safety tips from a local Martial Arts group

The White Tiger Martial Arts school in Hesperia has begun promoting winter safety with a checklist of tasks and chores for students to perform with their families and neighbors.

The following tips may help in preparing for and dealing with potentially dangerous weather.

What should I do to prepare?

• Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, wear mittens and a hat (preferably one that cover your ears).

• Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.

• Keep a keen eye on weather reports.

• Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank of gas will keep the fuel from freezing in the line.

• Running water, even a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

• Renew or repair your heating equipment and chimney by having them cleaned every year.

What supplies do I need?

• Water — at least a three-day supply or one gallon per person a day;

• At least a three-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food;

• Flashlights;

• Battery-powered radio;

• Extra pack of batteries;

• First aid kit;

• Multipurpose tools;

• Sanitation and personal hygiene supplies;

• Cell phones and chargers;

• Family and emergency contact list;

• Rock salt or sand to make a path on slippery and icy areas; and

• Alternate heating methods — fire places, space heater, coal or wood burning stove.

What do I do after a storm?

• Go to a public shelter if your home loses power or heat during a period of intense cold.

• Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain, dense fog or snow.

• Protect yourself from frostbite or hypothermia. Wear warm lightweight layers of clothing and avoid being out in the cold for a long period o f time.

• Help those who require assistance — elderly people, children and people with disabilities.

• For animals, make sure their food and water exit is not blocked and they have a warm place to stay.

• Check your local weather channel to see progress of the storm. Though it may seem to be over, it can be coming for round two right around the corner.
