Man gets 15 years to life for murder
VICTORVILLE • A 25-year-old Adelanto man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for killing a Vietnam veteran.
Stephen Gilbert Wilson Jr. accepted the prosecution’s offer and pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Steve Don Boone, 59. Victorville Superior Court Judge Jules Fleuret sentenced him immediately Friday upon Wilson’s request.
The victim was found dead with upper body trauma inside his mobile home in the 11100 block of Bartlett Avenue in July 2008, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials.
Bill Cheney, Wilson’s attorney, said he was surprised to hear Wilson’s decision Friday morning and protested the plea bargain.
“I did not agree, nor did I sign my name on Mr. Wilson’s agreement,” Cheney said. “I think that investigation on this case brought up facts that he wasn’t guilty of murder and anyone who thinks that the deceased is a poor innocent victim is simply ignorant of facts in this case. In the interest of justice, we were very poorly served in this case.”
“Justice was done in this case based on the circumstance,” Deputy District Attorney Donna Kauffman said.
Wilson had already served about four years and four months in jail awaiting trial. He will not earn any credit for good conduct in prison.
