Victorville man gets 4 years for golf club assault

VICTORVILLE • A 57-year-old Victorville man was sentenced to four years in prison for using a golf club to assault a woman who lived with him.

Bruce Robert Casey accepted the prosecution’s offer and pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury. Victorville Superior Court Judge John Tomberlin accepted the plea agreement and sentenced him immediately Friday.

On Dec. 10, San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic dispute call at a Victorville home.

Beverly Casey, the victim, said they got into an argument because the defendant had just lost his job and was distraught about it, according to Sheriff’s officials. She called her friend to come pick her up, but Bruce Casey assaulted her with a knife and then a golf club.

The defendant told investigators a different story. He had the skin on his nose peeled off, which he claimed had been bitten off by Beverly Casey. When the woman began throwing things around the house, Bruce Casey said he told her to leave. When she continued to wreck the house, he grabbed the golf club for protection, he told investigators.

Had he been convicted of all the charges in a trial, he could have faced at least 13 years to life in prison.
