One man dead, another clings to life after crash

HELENDALE • A man is dead and his younger cousin is clinging to life after a high-speed crash along National Trails Highway, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Manuel Cervantes, 31, of Buena Park died when his vehicle spun out while traveling north on National Trails Highway just north of the Riverside Cement Plant, said Officer William Osegueda of the Victorville CHP. Cervantes’ cousin, 18-year-old Rogelio Guerra of Helendale, was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Cervantes lost control of the vehicle sending it into a berm, and then the Honda landed back in the roadway.

Paramedics arrived to the scene and pronounced Cervantes dead at 9:05 p.m.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in this crash. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
