Man loses consciousness, slams into power pole
Crash triggers small brush fire
APPLE VALLEY • An elderly man lost consciousness and slammed his truck into a power pole Saturday, triggering a small brush fire and forcing crews to shut down a portion of Bear Valley Road for some time.
The incident happened just after noon on Bear Valley Road about a half-mile east of Central Road, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials.
The driver was an 81-year-old man who became unconscious for an unknown reason and hit the power pole, knocking it over. The power lines were wrapped around the truck, posing a public safety hazard that forced crews to shut down the road in the area.
The incident also caused a small grass fire adjacent to the truck, sheriff’s officials said. The blaze was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
The elderly driver was transported to a local hospital for observation.
Southern California Edison was still at the scene Saturday afternoon repairing the pole, though the road was open as of 3 p.m.
