Homeless encampment destroyed in morning fire

VICTORVILLE • A large portion of a Victorville homeless encampment burned Tuesday morning, sending a plume of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

San Bernardino County Fire officials said the large trash fire started at around 8:15 a.m. in the ravine north of D Street, near Interstate 15. This was not the large Victorville homeless camp in the riverbed, authorities pointed out.

Because of the different items in the camp — including computer parts, motor oil, tires, tents and clothing — officials said the fire had a toxic element to it.

Rescuers were hindered in their efforts because of the difficult terrain, according to Division Chief Sid Hultquist.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze. Victorville Code Enforcement officers were also called out the location.

It does not appear anyone was hurt in the fire, although some witnesses reported a cat may not have been able to escape the flames.
