Mobile home park tenants can stay

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • State officials said tenants at Hacienda Mobile Home Park can continue to live there despite the fact that the owner’s license to operate was suspended indefinitely last week.

“HCD (Department of Housing and Community Development) suspended the owners' ability to conduct business, such as collecting rent,” HCD spokesperson Alicia Murillo said. “The tenants can stay.”

Chief of Field Operations for HCD Chris Anderson said the park operator is ultimately responsible for the code infractions.

“Our action is against the park owner for not taking care of the health and safety violations at the park,” Anderson said.

He said the park owner obtained a permit to fix the failing sewer system on Feb. 14.

“But as far as I know of today they haven’t begun any of the work,” he said. “The main thing that we got to do is get a safe environment in the park. They’ve got to get on that and start making those repairs.”

Longtime Hacienda resident Claudia Rincon said her family will wait to see what happens.

“They’re giving the owner another chance to fix the stuff and hopefully this time she does,” Rincon said.

Rincon said her family hopes to stay for as long as possible and that they haven’t been affected directly by the electrical issues or overflowing sewage.

“My house is OK; it’s other people that are not OK,” she said. “We like our little house and our patio and our plants.”

Park Trustee Sharon Thurston said on Monday that she was working with a local contractor to complete the repair work on the septic system. The park was also out of code compliance for faulty electrical panels.
