Former AV captain endorsed as next sheriff

San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops, who announced his retirement Wednesday, will recommend Assistant Sheriff John McMahon as his successor to the county Board of Supervisors.

McMahon, who lives with his wife and two daughters in Phelan, served as the captain of the Apple Valley station for four years until 2007.

He graduated from Apple Valley High School in 1982 and began his career with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in 1985 at the Needles station.

Before his appointment to assistant sheriff, McMahon was a deputy chief of the desert patrol stations as well as the detentions and corrections bureau, overseeing four jail facilities.

He got an associate’s degree in Police Science from Victor Valley College and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union University, according to his profile on the county website. He was inducted into the VVC Alumni Hall of Fame in 2007.
