9 HUSD schools to get change in boundaries
Fewer than 600 students to be affected
Hundreds of Hesperia Unified School District students will attend different schools next August.
After more than two years, the Victor Valley’s largest school district is implementing boundary changes approved by the school board in April 2010.
The changes will affect five elementary schools: Cottonwood, Eucalyptus, Hollyvale, Mesa Grande and Maple. Four secondary schools will also be affected: Cedar Middle School, Hesperia High School, Hesperia Jr. High and Oak Hills High School.
Fewer than 600 students will be affected by the HUSD boundary changes, according to district officials.
“It’s basically an attempt to return to neighborhood schools,” said Robert McCollum, the principal of Hesperia Junior High School, who is currently on assignment to the district office and overseeing the boundary changes.
Hesperia Junior High School will be picking up some additional kids with the changes, McCollum said.
“Those kids are really close to me, but yet we’re (currently) shipping them over to Cedar,” he said.
The changes were made with an eye toward the post-recession future.
“Eventually, things will get corrected in this area,” McCollum said, as the community rebounds economically. “Out where the growth will be, at Cedar and Oak Hills, they’ll have room at those schools.”
To explain the details of the boundary changes, the district will hold a community meeting at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Eucalyptus Elementary.
