The fabulous world of Dr. Seuss
Sixth-graders hear how the Once-ler chopped down the last of the Truffula Trees as Nancy Perkins reads The Lorax to them at Cameron Elementary School Tuesday. Barstow Unified School District celebrated Theodor Seuss Geisel’s 106th birthday by reading Green Eggs and Ham, If I Ran the Zoo and other books to students from all over the district.
“I think it’s great,” Perkins said.
Randi Hamilton, 11, was so excited about celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday that she dressed up as the Cat-in-the-Hat and carried around a fish bowl. If I Ran the Zoo is Randi’s favorite, she said.
After students were finished being read to they were able to take a book home with them. Carri Mauldin, the English and language arts coach for the district said the books were donated by Delta Kappa Gamma, Rotary, Soroptimist and Kiwanis. It’s too soon to know how many students and readers showed up, but Mauldin said school officials will know when they figure out how many books they gave away.
“This was one of our best turnouts,” she said. “Everything went smoothly.”
