Fox beats Smith in 36th Assembly

Democrat to represent Phelan, Wrightwood, Pinon Hills

SACRAMENTO • Nearly a month after Election Day, revised vote tallies on Monday showed that Democrat Steve Fox narrowly beat out Republican businessman Ron Smith to win the 36th Assembly District, which includes Phelan, Wrightwood and Pinon Hills.

Fox, a lawyer and teacher from the Antelope Valley, pulled ahead by a mere 145 votes, according to revised vote counts from Los Angeles County. Fox received 66,005 votes to 65,860 for Smith.

Smith, who led in San Bernardino and Kern county portions of the Assembly District plans to seek a recount.

The political website reported that the Assembly assigned an office to Smith and posted his picture on the wall of Assembly Members. Smith had hired most of his staff, according to and the office of Legislative Counsel had already worked up legislation for Smith to introduce. The Assembly is set to swear in its new members at noon today.
