Vehicles overturn on icy road

Two incidents happened at same spot

APPLE VALLEY • A vehicle hit ice and flipped over near Deep Creek and Del Oro roads Wednesday morning, before another vehicle rolled over at the same spot just two hours later, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials.

No one was injured in the two separate incidents.

The first call came at 5:46 a.m., stating that three vehicles were involved, Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller said. When deputies arrived, however, it appeared only one vehicle was turned over, she said. The vehicle slid on a patch of ice on the street, hit the embankment and rolled over, according to Miller.

An Apple Valley Town official came out and put up warning signs and scattered cinders, town spokeswoman Kathie Martin said.

The Sheriff’s Apple Valley station received the second call at 8:04 a.m. that a single vehicle rolled over at the same location.

The vehicle slid on ice, hit the embankment and rolled over just as the first vehicle had done, Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Cunningham said. The driver was wearing a seat belt.

A town official arrived at the scene again and put additional signs and cinders, Martin said.

The nearby roads were closed before the deputies cleared the scene around 9 a.m.

A pipe broke at a house nearby, causing the water to leak onto the streets and freeze overnight, according to Trish Hill, spokeswoman at the Sheriff’s Apple Valley station.

Martin said the town proactively put cinders at risky locations on cold days, but the accident scene wasn’t one of them.
