Big rig dumps carrots along I-15

Driver injured in crash

HESPERIA • A big rig rolled off Interstate 15 and dumped its load of carrots onto the freeway shoulder and onto the road below Tuesday night.

The driver, Ricardo Perez, broke his leg in the accident, which happened a half-mile north of Oak Hill Road at about 10:35 p.m., a sergeant from the California Highway Patrol said.

No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured. There were no arrests and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Sgt. Mark Sunseri said by phone Wednesday.

A northbound truck was hauling two trailers of carrots to Bakersfield when it lost control while making an unsafe turn, probably while changing lanes, Sunseri said. It crashed onto Mariposa Road.

The accident was still under investigation, Sunseri said. CHP Officer David Bradford, who is investigating the accident, had not yet spoken with Perez, who was still undergoing treatment at an area hospital, Sunseri said.

Perez owned the tractor while the trailers were registered to another transportation company in Bakersfield, Sunseri said.
