Plea reached in police standoff incident
Barstow man sentenced to one year in jail
BARSTOW • A Barstow man who situated himself inside his home and refused to respond to police for roughly three hours following reports of a domestic dispute pleaded guilty to making a criminal threat, according to court records.
Luis Espiritu, 21, was sentenced Wednesday to one year in county jail and three years of supervised probation after he accepted the prosecution’s offer to drop additional charges of spousal abuse and willful cruelty to a child, court records showed.
Espiritu was credited 11 days for time served plus good behavior, according to court records.
On Feb. 3, the Barstow Police Department’s Special Response Team entered Espiritu’s home and retrieved his 1-year-old son, who was believed to be in danger, after Espiritu failed to respond to several attempts by police to contact him, authorities said the following day.
Police had responded to the residence on the 300 block of Forest Avenue on a domestic disturbance call at approximately 1:52 a.m. Upon arrival, police said they learned Espiritu was allegedly intoxicated inside the home with the boy.
Espiritu’s live-in girlfriend, whom he allegedly physically assaulted, had fled to a neighbor’s home with the couple’s 4-year-old son. She received several contusions and lacerations on her face and was treated by emergency medical services near the incident location, according to police.
Several people in the area were evacuated from their homes during the standoff, which lasted until approximately 4:42 a.m., police said.
A condition of Espiritu’s three-year probation is to not have any contact with the alleged victim, according to court records.
