Proposed solar plants to sell sun power

Staff Writer

Hesperia’s abundant sunlight will soon be turned into electricity for Southern Californians generally, if two proposed projects see the light of day.

Sybak Photovoltaic has submitted two proposed solar arrays in different areas of the city.

“There’s two simultaneous applications in two separate locations,” Dave Reno, principal planner for the city of Hesperia, said Friday afternoon.

The first project is on a vacant 10-acre site on Rock Springs Road, just east of Glendale Avenue. The back two-thirds of the site would be covered with a ground-mounted solar panel array, generating 1.5 megawatts of electricity.

The second proposed project is on Cambria Road, about a quarter mile south of Main Street and about a half a mile west of Highway 396. The 5-acre site already has a single family home located on the south side of the site, but much of the rest would again be covered in the ground-mounted solar panels, generating 1.0 megawatts of electricity.

The power generated would be sold to Southern California Edison.

But it’ll be a while before Hesperians connected to the grid can benefit from locally generated solar power.

“We just got these (applications). We’re not even done accepting them as complete,” Reno said. “We’re not looking at hearings for a while.”
