Three men get probation for scam

Fraud foiled by scammer's own LoJack system

VICTORVILLE • Three men were each sentenced to three years of probation after trying to commit insurance fraud, which investigators discovered through a LoJack system on the car.

Ricardo Felix, Arnoldo Villarreal and Fernando Gomez each accepted the prosecution’s offer Wednesday in Victorville Superior Court.

• Felix pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of providing false insurance information.

• Villarreal pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of obstructing a public officer.

• Gomez pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of obstructing a public officer.

Felix, of Phoenix, was arrested in April after the vehicle he had reported stolen to his insurance company was located at a family member’s home.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff ’s Department received a LoJack notification of a stolen vehicle in the area of 11th Avenue and Bear Valley Road. Several deputies responded to the call and discovered the vehicle hidden in the back of a home in the 11900 block of 10th Avenue in Hesperia.

The deputies contacted the registered owner, later identified as Felix, to inform him his vehicle had been found and four people were being detained.

Through an investigation, they learned Felix had conspired with family members to hide his vehicle then report it stolen to Huntington Park police, according to sheriff’s officials. He then reported the alleged theft to his insurance company.

What Felix did not know, though, was that his vehicle was equipped with the LoJack system, officials said.
