Car chase suspects reach plea bargain
Vehicle stolen from Barstow Valero employee
BARSTOW • A Las Vegas man who led police on a high-speed chase through the Barstow Heights area pleaded guilty to stealing the car from a Valero employee at the East Main Street business.
Chane Lee Anderson, 22, entered into the plea deal Thursday after the District Attorney’s office agreed to drop an additional charge of evading a peace officer, court records showed.
Anderson was sentenced to two years in prison with 28 days credited for time served and good behavior.
Andrew Michael Tapps, 22, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of attempted vehicle theft and was sentenced to eight months in prison with 28 days credited for time served and good behavior.
Anderson was the driver when he and Tapps were spotted Jan. 13 inside the victim’s Honda Accord on Main Street. Barstow police attempted to stop the vehicle heading southbound on Interstate 15, but Anderson sped up — leading police on a chase throughout the Barstow Heights area.
The vehicle eventually crashed into a dirt berm on Linda Vista Road, just west of I Street.
Police investigation determined the ignition was “punched” — a process by which one punches the ignition mechanism out and uses a screwdriver to start the vehicle — and then stolen from the Valero parking lot earlier in the day.
