INVESTIGATION: San Bernardino County Sheriff's Apple Valley station deputies and detectives interviewed witnesses and possible victims after a shooting report near Thunberbird Road in Apple Valley on Thursday afternoon. After several reports of a man brandishing a weapon and a shooting, nearby Phoenix Academy was placed on lockdown and the reports of shootings were investigated.

Phoenix Academy briefly placed on lockdown

APPLE VALLEY • Phoenix Academy was placed on a brief lockdown Thursday afternoon because of a 911 call that shots had been fired in the neighborhood.

The school received a call from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at 1:21 p.m., ordering a lockdown because of a “potentially dangerous situation,” Principal Mariana Torres said.

The Sheriff's Department received a 911 call alleging that someone had fired shots in the area and locked the school down as a precautionary measure, sheriff ’s spokeswoman Trish Hill said. Deputies responded to the area, but could not find the caller or any victims and suspects, Hill said.

The lockdown was called off at 1:39 p.m., though deputies continued the investigation.

“Right now we don’t have anything,” Hill said on the phone at 3 p.m. Thursday. “In light of what’s gone on recently, we erred on the side of caution.”

The school conducted a regular dismissal after the lockdown.

Torres said lockdowns don’t happen often. “But if anything happens, we always take the cautionary side,” she said.

Phoenix Academy is in the 20700 block of Thunderbird Road.
