Substitute teacher charged with child molestation
Wrightwood resident arrested for dating Phelan girl, officials say
PHELAN • A Serrano High School substitute teacher was arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old student, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials.
The Snowline Joint Unified School District received an anonymous tip on Jan. 17 that a substitute teacher might be having a relationship with a student, according to a news release. After looking into the allegation, the district notified the Sheriff’s Department.
According to investigators, teacher Ryan John Browning was dating a girl he met in one of his classes. The relationship began sometime between September and October when they exchanged phone numbers, officials said.
They had at least one romantic encounter, according to the release.
The District Attorney’s office reviewed the case and filed a misdemeanor child molestation charge against Browning on Wednesday, according to court records.
He was arrested the same day at his home in the 26600 block of Timberline Drive in Wrightwood, according to the Sheriff’s Department. He was booked into Victor Valley jail on $50,000 bail. He has been released from custody pending court appearances. Browning didn’t immediately return Daily Press’ phone call Thursday.
He is registered to substitute teach throughout the county, the Sheriff’s release stated. Kathy Sharkey, communications director for the Snowline school district, said Browning has taught at the following schools:
• Phelan Elementary
• Pinon Hills Elementary
• Wrightwood Elementary
• Vista Verde Elementary
• Heritage School
• Pinon Mesa Middle School
• Quail Valley Middle School
• Serrano High
• Chaparral High
• Eagle Summit Community Day School
