Woman killed in Phelan head-on collision
PHELAN • A woman died in a car crash early Friday morning in Phelan when her vehicle veered across the yellow line into oncoming traffic.
The 22-year-old, who hasn’t yet been identified, was driving a 2010 Chevy Aveo westbound on Phelan Road around 1 a.m. Friday when she crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with a 2005 Toyota Scion, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner’s report.
Pedro Antonio Martinez, 30, of Victorville was driving the Scion eastbound at approximately 55 mph when the Aveo collided with his vehicle, according to CHP spokesperson Joaquin Zubieta.
The female died on impact and her vehicle immediately became engulfed in flames. The accident was witnessed by several passersby who stopped to assist, according to Zubieta.
Responding to a 911 call, firefighters arrived on scene and pronounced the female dead, according to the report.
Martinez suffered major injuries and was airlifted by a helicopter to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, according to Zubieta. No further details on Martinez’s condition were available.
The cause of the accident is unknown, and the California Highway Patrol is still investigating.
The woman’s name will be released after she is identified and her family is notified.
