Drunken pedestrian hit on Kiowa Road

APPLE VALLEY • A drunken pedestrian was seriously injured when he stepped in front of a car on Kiowa Road near Caddo Road, officials said Monday.

Richard Slayton, 58, was walking north along the east shoulder of Kiowa Road around 8:56 p.m. Saturday when for an unknown reason he stepped into traffic and into the path of a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by a teenager, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Apple Valley Station.

The juvenile could not stop her car in time and struck Slayton, who sustained broken legs and trauma to his chest.

When the Apple Valley Fire Protection District arrived, Slayton was in the middle of the southbound lane of Kiowa Road.

Officials gave medical aid to Slayton, and he was then flown to Antelope Valley Hospital for treatment. Slayton was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the collision, according to officials.
