New gun shop to open on Main Street
Owners hope to change dangerous image of guns
BARSTOW • A new gun store is coming to town.
Route 66 Guns and Ammo will be the only gun store in Barstow after Riley’s Reloader closed last September.
The new store put up its sign last week and is already drawing a large amount of community attention, even though the shop won’t be open for business until the end of February.
According to Owner Lorren Schendel, ammunition at neighboring High Desert gun shops is out of stock, and for this reason he gets about ten calls a day asking when his store will open.
Schendel and his wife, Susan, will run the Main Street shop together as a family business. They said they hope to promote the sporting side of guns, which is a popular hobby in the desert area, he said.
“I am a gun owner because I go hunting, I like the sport,” Schendel said. “Guns are fun.”
Schendel said he received his first gun when he was 11 years old, and it was something that taught him responsibility and respect. “We’re trying to change the image,” he said.
Susan Schendel said she hopes women and children are comfortable in their shop and that one of her focuses will be teaching women’s self-defense.
“We want to make it more of a family store where women and children feel welcome,” she said. “It’s a positive thing.”
According to Lorren Schendel, there are many species in the surrounding areas that are hunted, including quail, doves, chukar and deer. He said hunters looking for supplies have to go to Victorville or Apple Valley.
The new store will be a full service gun shop, with firearm repairs, reloading, black powder, supplies, locks and cases, safes, cleaning kits, optics and scopes, safety gear and pellet guns for kids.
Schendel is also the owner of Firestone Tire and Repair Shop on Main Street, which has been in business for 25 years.
For updates on the official store opening see the store's Facebook page at www.facebook.com (Route 66 Guns & Ammo.) The store is located at 1581 West Main Street.
