New cell tower brings in money for AVUSD
APPLE VALLEY • Residents near the east side of the Victor Valley may have noticed an old-fashioned water tank on the Apple Valley High School campus.
It's really a cellphone tower.
The new cell tower has been in the works since 2009 when Metro PCS Communications Network first approached the district, according to Matthew Schulenberg, assistant superintendent of administrative services for Apple Valley Unified School District.
Schulenberg said the AVUSD Board of Trustees approved its Communications License Agreement in November 2011, which would provide the district with $2,000 per month in compensation for the first 12 months.
In addition, the district will receive payment amount increases of 3 percent annually, said Schulenberg. During the design process, Schulenberg said, Metro PCS offered to place the district’s logo on the sides of the tank.
Metro PCS chose to place its tower on the AVHS campus because the company is expanding its network and had identified that site as a desirable location in its overall network design, Schulenberg said.
