New mayor, council members on agenda
Council to vote on 1.5 percent raises for staff
The city of Hesperia will select a new mayor, seat two council members and discuss employee salaries during Tuesday’s meeting.
The short agenda includes the swearing-in of incumbent Mike Leonard and of Eric Schmidt, a local businessman and engineer who ousted Councilman Paul Bosacki after Schmidt won his seat.
Schmidt received 19.65 percent of the vote and Leonard grabbed 17.71 percent during the November election, according to the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters.
After the council seats are filled, Mayor Russ Blewett and Mayor Pro Tem Bill Holland will give up their titles as the council reorganizes.
Traditionally, the current mayor pro tem would take the top spot, with the second seat wide open among the four council members.
But Schmidt may be appointed as mayor pro tem, giving him a chance for the top spot at the end of 2013, which would result in all five council members serving as mayor during their time on the council.
The public is invited to a cupcake reception following the meeting to celebrate the new council members, and to show appreciation to outgoing council member Bosacki.
The council will also discuss salary ranges and benefits included in the memorandum of understanding between the city and the San Bernardino County Public Employees Association.
If approved, a salary increase of 1.5 percent will take effect in January and July to restore prior salary reductions, according to a staff report.
Besides salary increases and benefits, the employee agreement lists the monthly salary ranges for more than 100 job classifications, including a custodian position with a range of $2,813 to $3,420 each month and the assistant city manager post, earning $10,644 to $12,975 monthly.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hesperia City Hall, 9700 Seventh Ave. View a complete agenda and live streaming video of the meeting at www.CityOfHesperia.us.
