Pedestrians injured by car in Lenwood

Iowa couple were hauling band gear to Pasadena for Rose Parade

Staff Writer

LENWOOD • Two Iowa band parents who stopped in Lenwood while on their way to Pasadena for the Rose Parade were struck by a wayward vehicle after it jumped a curb, rolled and came to rest in the Burger King parking lot, Barstow Police Interim Lieutenant Mike Hunter confirmed Friday.

The vehicle was traveling along High Point Parkway on Wednesday when it lost control, for reasons still unknown, and hit Kevin and Nancy Jansen at around 10:01 a.m. as they walked on the sidewalk, Hunter said.

Kevin Jansen suffered “more serious injuries” and was airlifted by Mercy Air to an undisclosed hospital. Nancy Jansen was taken to Barstow Community Hospital with minor injuries. Both were treated and have since been released.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and the vehicle was towed. No drugs or alcohol were involved, Hunter confirmed.

The Jansens were using their semi to haul instruments and uniforms to Pasadena when they stopped at a rest area in Lenwood, MOC/FV Superintendent Gary Richardson told KTIV-TV in Sioux City.

They, as well as the band gear, are now safely with the band, which arrived in Pasadena on Thursday night, according to Richardson.

The MOC/Floyd Valley High School Pride of the Dutchmen Marching Band out of Orange City is one of several schools scheduled to perform at the parade Tuesday, the Tournament of Roses website showed. The MOC/Floyd Valley school district covers cities Orange City, Alton and Hospers in northwest Iowa.

The Barstow Police Department is still investigating the cause of the accident.
