Sultana wins fall clean-up day high school competition

It may not be the Key Game, but in a head-to-head competition between the city's three comprehensive high schools, Sultana High School came out on top last month.

During Make a Difference Day on October 24, more than 220 volunteers picked up 925 bags of trash, as well as mattresses, tires and other debris.

"It was fairly typical, but for the 220 volunteers, it was high," said the city's Environmental Programs Coordinator, Julie Ryan. "Some of the groups worked really hard."

Each of the three Hesperia Unified School District high schools collected more than 100 bags of trash: Hesperia High School picked up 123, Oak Hills High School picked up 144 and Sultana picked up 181.

Each school got $1 per bag of trash and Sultana took home an enormous trophy, awarded at the October 20 meeting of the Hesperia City Council.

Groups participating in the clean-up day event included Cedar Middle School, Sultana's AVID and Key Clubs, the GC1Z5AE Don't Tread On Me geocaching group, Courtyard by Marriott, City of Hesperia employees and families, the Johannes family, Mary Ann's Restaurant, Canyon Ridge High School ASB, Hesperia High School girl's soccer team, Hesperia Kiwanis Club, and individual residents.

The event was sponsored by Advance Disposal, Griffin Structures, Keep a California Beautiful, Victor Valley Transit Authority, Daily Press and Advantage Business Forms.

The city's next clean-up day will be in April, said Ryan.
