Medical helicopter uses school athletic field

HESPERIA • A medical helicopter landed on the athletic field at Hesperia Junior High School on Thursday morning after witnesses saw a female pedestrian fall to the ground and hit her head near Fifth Avenue and Yucca Street.

At approximately 10:48 a.m., witnesses saw the woman fall and land in the gutter, according to Sue Rose, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia station.

Witnesses contacted the unidentified woman’s daughter, who told them that her mother had diabetes and my have fallen because of a low blood sugar episode, Rose said. As a precaution, Rose said, the woman was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.

Hesperia Junior High School Assistant Principal Isaac Newman-Gomez said the field was used to land the helicopter safely, as the field was the open area nearest to the incident.
