One dead, five injured in head-on collision
Driver dies after crossing into oncoming lane, hitting another vehicle
HESPERIA • A head-on collision early New Year's morning left one man dead and five victims in the hospital with serious injuries, officials said.
Just before 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday, a man was driving a 1994 Honda north on Cottonwood Ave., when he crossed into the southbound lane of traffic for unknown reasons and collided head on with a southbound 1997 Acura near Sycamore Ave., according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department press release.
Deputies from the Hesperia sheriff’s station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the scene. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, and his name has not been released pending notification of family.
The occupants of the Acura, two adults and three children, were all seriously injured and were transported to various hospitals by air and ground ambulances, according to the release.
Cottonwood Avenue was closed in both directions between Manzanita and Sycamore until approximately 6 a.m.
The incident is under investigation by the Hesperia station Major Accident Investigation Team. Anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Deputy Kevin McCurdy from the Hesperia Station at (760) 947-1500.
