Cody Gregg gets 46 write-in votes

Son of newly elected park board member was one of two registered write-in candidates in the county this year

Staff Writer

His father won a seat on the Hesperia Recreation and Park Board, but the harder road Cody Gregg traveled this election season ended differently.

While Kelly Gregg finished the race in second place, unseating Dave Dupree, his son Cody did not turn in the papers necessary to have his name on the ballot, second-guessing his decision to pick up the paperwork earlier in the season. The younger Gregg had a good reason: He is currently stationed in Afghanistan with the California National Guard.

But the younger Gregg still wanted to run for the board, and completed the paperwork necessary to be one of two officially recognized write-in candidates this year in San Bernardino County. (Unless they have filled out the necessary paperwork, other candidates whose names were written in had their votes discarded.)

In the end, though, his absence from the ballot, and perhaps his long-distance candidacy cost him: Cody Gregg garnered only 46 votes in the end.

"Thank you for your support," Gregg wrote via Facebook from Afghanistan on Thursday. "As a write-in candidate we gave it our best. I support the newly elected board and hope to see a change that benefits the constituents."

His father, Kelly, will be sworn in on Dec. 8.
