Cargo trailer fire shuts down eastbound I-40

Two lanes closed Thursday morning for approximately two hours

STAFF WRITER

LUDLOW • A truck’s cargo trailer caught fire near mile marker 45, which shut down both eastbound lanes on Interstate 40 for approximately two hours Thursday morning, California Highway Patrol spokesman Adam Croxton said.

“The driver looked into the rearview mirror and saw smoke coming out of the trailer,” Croxton said. “He pulled over and unsuccessfully tried to extinguish it.”

The driver then unhitched his trailer from the truck, Croxton said. CHP arrived on the scene at approximately 6:58 a.m.

The trailer contained clothing, electronics and printed materials. It became fully engulfed and eventually burned to the ground, Croxton said.

One I-40 eastbound lane remained closed for clean-up as of 3 p.m. Thursday.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
