School board meeting continues Tuesday morning

Staff Writer

After a little more than three hours of meeting Monday night, the Hesperia Unified School District school board continued its meeting to Tuesday morning.

The meeting, which began late, as board members remained in closed session for approximately 40 minutes longer than usual, was heavy on public comments -- including from Sultana High School students worried that the school's AVID program would be cut back and LaVerne Prep students and supporters urging the board to support a petition to extend the school's elementary program to cover 7th and 8th grade -- as well as reports on the district's financial welfare and a plan for improving student achievement.

At 10:30 -- the "witching hour" beyond which board president Hardy Black has traditionally been unwilling to extend meetings -- the board had still not voted on any of the action items in their agenda, including making decisions on how the district will select which teachers to lay off if it cannot find any way to close a growing budget deficit.

So the board will pick things up on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.
