Barstow man faces felony hit-and-run charges

Allegedly fled scene, left elderly woman behind

Staff Writer

BARSTOW• A Barstow man is scheduled to appear in court next Thursday on felony hit-and-run charges after he allegedly fled the scene of a single-car rollover crash and left behind a badly-injured elderly female passenger, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

Robert Weber, 36, was the alleged driver of the 2010 Dodge Challenger that was headed northbound on Highway 247, approximately three miles south of Barstow, when the incident took place, according to officials.

The vehicle careened more than 100 feet off the roadway sometime between the evening of Jan. 15 and the morning of Jan. 16, CHP spokesman Adam Croxton said.

“There was a slight hill,” Croxton explained. “It was quite a ways off the roadway and difficult to spot even during the day.”

The vehicle, which had severe rollover damage, was noticed by a passerby who called the CHP at about 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 16.

Upon arrival, CHP officers found the vehicle and a 62-year-old woman, a Barstow resident, in the right passenger seat suffering from severe head trauma.

She was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton in critical condition, Croxton said. Her relationship to Weber is currently unknown.

The CHP made the arrest after conducting several in-depth interviews and investigations, according to the release.

Weber pleaded not guilty during his arraignment last Friday, court records showed. If convicted, he faces two to four years in prison under current California law.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
